2019 SUMMIT
The Northern Tribal Border Summit (“Summit”) continued discussions from the first Summit held in August 2017 and the second Summit held in May 2018 to provide leaders of First Nations and tribal governments located on or near the United States – Canada border an opportunity to discuss border crossing and related issues. During the first day of the Summit, tribal leaders and representatives met at the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino on the United States side. Participants were encouraged to utilize their Jay Treaty rights to meet in Canada during the second day of the Summit to allow for potential meetings with Canadian officials. Sessions covered the Trump and Trudeau Administrations’ border policies, tribe-specific border advocacy efforts, and opportunities for continued tribal engagement with both the American and Canadian federal governments in an effort to protect the inherent political, social, cultural, and commercial rights of First Nations and tribal communities to cross the border.
